Unframed, quality art print, illustrating historic eating habits.
Tommy Atkins has been common slang for the British soldier almost since Napoleonic times, similar to 'GI' for US soldiers, 'Landser' for German, 'Poilu' for French. In an age before sophisticated food preservation technology or dietary understanding, coupled with the requirement for portability, their diet was notoriously bland. Bully beef and hard tack biscuits washed down with rum would have been regular rations on campaign. No wonder armies on the march were infamous for their unofficial foraging habits.
Compare this to today's, western societies' dilemma of the over abundance of food. Step forward another Atkins and his scientific nutritional regimen. Dr Atkins's low carb, high fat and protein diet is a contrasting juxtaposition to the food scarcity of the past.
As once our ancestors struggled to find enough, now we realize abundance is almost as destructive.
